Why do SOME African-Americans claim to be…?
Puerto Rican when they’re not?!!! Okay, I’m Puerto Rican and I’ve ran into SOME black people (African Americans) that say "oh, I’m half Puerto Rican and black" or they’ll straight out say "I’m Puerto Rican". When I ask them what part of P.R. they’re from or their family’s from, they say "I don’t know, nigga" and they do not speak a drop of Spanish (not even the basic words a English speaker would know). I know that there are some Afro-Puerto Ricans and mulattos who can pass as an African American but these people I’m talking about are straight out AfricanAmerican. Even the Afro Puerto Rican that is born in the U.S. has some type of knowledge when it comes to their culture. These people I’m talking about, don’t. I’m from Los Angeles and I have relatives from NYC, Chicago to Miami and Orlando. I attended the Puerto Rican day parade in NYC this year. I saw so many black people like I’ve never seen before. A girl who was standing behind me with a Puerto Rican flag , (**SMH**) said "I’m not Puerto Rican, I’m black, but I come to the parade for the cute niggas"…Even videos shot on YouTube of the NYC PR Day Parade have interviews with black people who are not even Puerto Rican and claim to be. Even my Mexican friend who was with me said "wow" lol. I see that some blacks try to pass for Puerto Ricans and it infuriates me because the ones who claim they are, are often the ghetto ones with no education and it gives us a bad name without them even being Puerto Rican!…the ones at the parade made it look really ghetto. I’m not saying Puerto Ricans aren’t ghetto because I’ve seen alot that are but at least they’re Puerto Rican and not a different group of people giving us a bad name. I’m not saying ALL black people but SOME do…why? I’ve also witnessed some claiming being Belizean, Dominican or Cuban…is it lack of identity in the U.S.? I don’t know. I know I’m going to get my ass whopped on here by black people but I’m just curious…I’m not the only person that wonders this. Even my friends who happen to be non Puerto Rican-Latino and white ask me the same thing!!!
I KNOW THAT THERE ARE AFRO-PUERTO RICANS (BLACK PUERTO RICANS)! I’M TALKING ABOUT AFRICAN AMERICANS, NOT LATINOS OF AFRICAN HERITAGE OR PUERTO RICANS OF AFRICAN HERITAGE!
Maybe they’re joking.

not reading this but if you knew anything about puerto ricans you would know most of the island is either black or mixed. Your average puerto rican from the island is black, tiano indian, and european(spain). learn your history and stfu.

cause MOST of the time they are. Puerto ricans already have black in them so when they mix with a black the kids look full black with curly loose hair. or with smaller black features.
Domincans usually look black same with cubans.. the indigenious ones dont however..
i think u need to get educated on your culture.. MOSt americanized people dont know to much about there own culture unless they lived there for a while.

There can be people who are racially black who has both PR and AA heritage..Infact thats common in NYC.

They ain’t jokin. Black American/Puerto Rican mixes are EXTREMELY common in NYC, and most Nuyoricans have Black blood already, so the kid usually comes out lookin Black.
Just because you have a mix in you doesn’t mean you’re attached to your culture either. I know a girl who’s full Peruvian and knows nothing about Peru. Many Italian-Americans know next to nothing about Italy, and many Irish people know absolutely nothin about Ireland.
Just curious though, if these were lightskinned people and not morenos, would you be so quick to say that they’re fake? I mean, I know plenty of non-Black boricuas que no sabe na’ de su cultura, but nobody ever questions if they’re Latin or not because they "look the part". So why is it that Black Latinos have to PROVE their ancestry?

I don’t know. Maybe it’s because they’re trying to relate to you or something….I don’t know. But one thing I do know is that I’ve never met a black person claiming to be puerto rican. I’m not denying that there are black people who claim to be puerto rican but I’ve never seen it.

Who the HELL cares let them be whoever they want to be.
I sure would not claim it.
Good Luck!

Just for the record: I am black and have also noticed the same thing.
I have no reason to attack you because I KNOW that you are telling the truth.
I have seen it with my own eyes.
I know some black Dominicans and black Puerto Ricans who are VISIBLY BLACK but they claim NOT to be black.
I just laugh at them.
They have self hate issues.
Even though there are black Hispanics, many of them deny even being part black.
It is literally sad.

Idk but it bothers me.. I’ve noticed that too! It seems like they want to be everything but black
(not trying to be mean)
Im not Puerto Rican but all the African Americans in my school try to be spanish…
I actaully am fully spanish and they just give us a bad name…
And i know sometimes they actually turn out to be like only a half or a third spanish but most of the time they are straight up haitian, african or jamaican trying to be a type of spanish culture..and if they are dark then they obviously have SOME black in them…
I mean, WHY???

I’m Puerto Rican, Black and Tahitian and I speak Spanish Fluently. I know a lot of Hispanics or half hispanics that don’t speak any Spanish, my Cousin, she’s full Puerto Rican, and she speaks no Spanish but her parents do. And Why do you care if Black people are at a parade? Everyone’s invited, I’ve been to the PR parade in NYC and took my husband and kids, my husband is Samoan and Black and nobody cared or seemed to notice! And I also know some black people( my half sister, and my bff) and they speak Spanish, my half sister is married to a Dominican guy. Maybe it’s just where you live, LA has a lot of Hispanics and Blacks…

I think your just upset that a lot of Blacks come from Puerto Rico.
If you feel so embarassed just claim Spain.
Zaire | Nov 15, 2009
Ummm… I have had (and even currently have) half Spanish friends who don’t speak a lick of Spanish. Why? Because they were raised by their non-Spanish parent. So let us not act like if you don’t speak the language of if you don’t know which part of Puerto Rican that parent is from then you MUST NOT be Spanish.
"Even videos shot on YouTube of the NYC PR Day Parade have interviews with black people who are not even Puerto Rican and claim to be."
How are you able to make such a conclusion by merely watching a video? All you can judge is their appearance and maybe they don’t meet the guidelines of being PR based on what you think a PR should look like, but how do you know that they aren’t PR in nationality?
And why do you have a problem with the Black girl showing up to the PR day parade? I mean, she admitted that she wasn’t PR. Is the PR Day parade exclusively for PR??? Curious folks and tourists can’t show up and have fun too? Geez. . .
"The ones who claim they are, are often the ghetto ones with no education and it gives us a bad name without them even being Puerto Rican!…The ones at the parade made it look really ghetto. I’m not saying Puerto Ricans aren’t ghetto because I’ve seen alot that are . . . "
Sweetheart, I’m from the Northeast where it is congested with PR’s (as you already know) and you don’t need us (or anyone else) to give you a bad name or further worsen it. . . trust me when I say that y’all have quite a rep up there and y’all do a very swell job of defacing it on your own!
JAY: You are speaking of a WHOLE ‘NOTHER CASE. I agree with your observation though because I’ve seen the same thing- certain Blacks of a Spanish nationality who claim to be Spanish while rebuking that their roots are largely within the African Diaspora. Those Carribean Blacks are stupid and self-hating. But that’s a whole ‘nother case and topic. . .
TWIGGY: How do we give you a bad name? Spanish folks can be just as "ghetto" and foolish, if not more, than Black folks. And look at the statistics: you’re own women are suffering as well, you moron! Is that our fault?
AirWOman | Nov 15, 2009
i used to see the same thing back in HS, many African Americans claiming to be puerto ricans, it kinda bothered me even tho im not puerto rican ( im peruvian) but many of my friends were boricuas and i could tell they didnt like it one bit.
